Located in the west side of Indianapolis, this five-and-a-half-acre park was opened in 1922 and is one of Indy’s most popular family destinations. This expansive green space features a plethora of walking trails and pavilions where visitors can take in the fresh air and catch a few rays of sun.
Residents are encouraged to use the city’s extensive network of public parks and playgrounds as well as the many splash pads. Indy’s parks and recreation department provides access to 212 parks, 11,254 acres, 130 playgrounds, 155 sports fields, 153 miles of trails, 23 recreation centers & nature centers and 20 aquatic centers. The city also hosts Lilly Global Day of Service, which brings together hundreds of volunteers from Eli Lilly and Company to plant trees, establish a prairie, paint murals and more throughout the city.

The park boasts 73,000+ parking spots ranging from street to garage. There’s also a small but dedicated area for motorcyclists, as well as a number of bike racks and bike lanes to keep the hounds of hell at bay. Despite the park’s size, it still manages to find a balance between fun and functional. The best part is, the park is free to use for as long as you’re there, which makes it an ideal place to test your mettle in the name of science. The park is also a nice place to take in the city’s natural surroundings.
The park has a number of other cool things to see and do, too. Those with an eye for all things green and greenery can check out the horticultural exhibits, or check out the large pond for some serious oohs and ahhs. It also boasts a well-maintained trail system, plenty of picnic areas, and of course the largest fountain in town.
Located on the city’s near westside, Haughville Park is also home to the largest IMAX movie theatre in town and a surprisingly large pond with a fish tally worthy of a celebrity or two. The 5 and a half acre park is not to be missed as it’s got a lot of charm.
It’s a shame the weather isn’t as warm in this part of the state, but Haughville Park is still a nice place to go for a walk. The best part is that you’ll see something different every time. It’s a great way to get out of the house and enjoy some much needed vitamin D!

The neighborhood was first settled in the 1830s and grew after a bridge was built over the White River connecting it to Indianapolis, which annexed the town in 1897.
