Playground
Located on the southeast side of Indianapolis, Sandorf Park Dawson St is a unique and engaging recreational space that provides a safe place for kids to play. A three-year makeover by SYNLawn Indiana turned the previously dilapidated park into an inspiring playground with a variety of amenities for kids of all ages.
The renovation incorporated a 20-foot fully accessible playground and play structure, a color-coated Junior NBA basketball court, a triple threat pump track for skateboarding and riding bikes, a youth fitness challenge course with exercise equipment, the state’s first multiuse game area (MUGA) court and eight walkways, all lined with artificial turf and a rubberized safety surface.
But the makeover was not without challenges. The project was delayed by two years due to unexpected environmental issues that needed remediation. Thankfully, the team was able to work with IDEM on a plan that combines environmental protection objectives with the needs of the park. The newly remodeled Sandorf Park in Indianapolis is one of the best places for a picnic. The park features a large playground with everything from climbing nets to tunnel slides. It also has a large merry-go-round, swings and even a small structure for young children.
The park was redesigned three years ago to address environmental challenges that were part of the site’s past as a dump. The renovation included a new playground, basketball courts, a pump track and the city’s first enclosed MUGA court. Browning Day worked with the city of Indianapolis and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to update the park’s design so it meets the standards for remediating a landfill site while still serving as a great neighborhood park.
Walking Trails
The park has a number of walking trails for you to explore. Some of them run along Lake Wintergreen and others connect to Judges Cave.
There’s also a trail that runs along the White River. It connects Broad Ripple to downtown Indianapolis.
This is a great place for families with children to spend time together. It has plenty of playground equipment, including a giant climbing structure that has net ropes, tunnel slides and much more!
Lastly, there’s a track for skateboarding and riding bikes. There are also basketball courts and plenty of picnic tables to enjoy.
